Chief Economist Gita Gopinath Kicks off New Year with This Heartwarming Pic

Chief Economist of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Gita Gopinath has kicked off the New Year in “Desi” style.

She shared a photograph of herself savouring a Gol Gappa aka Pani Puri.

“Happy 2022, Gol Guppa aka Pani Puri to kick off the new year!”, she wrote along with the picture.

The photograph just goes to prove that like most Indians, Gita Gopinath enjoys her street food too. In the photo, you can see her holding the Gol Gappa while her plate is laden with the stuffing. You can’t miss the tamarind water nearby!

Many Twitter users wished the Chief Economist for the New Year. It was not long before her photo became a topic of discussion.

One user commented that Gita being from Kolkata should’ve referred Gol Gappa as Phuchka whereas another commenter expressed that Gol Gappas sold in street stalls are tastier than Gol Gappas sold in restaurants.

Gita was born in Kolkata however she completed her education in Mysore and Delhi. She earned an MBA degree from the University of  Washington in 1996. She further earned a Ph.D  in economics from Princeton University.

History was made when she became the first woman chief economist of  the International Monetary Fund.

She’s known to be a workaholic and makes no qualms about working during odd hours.

At present Gita is gearing up to become the deputy managing director of the IMF. She’ll be working with IMF chief Kristalina Georgieva.

In an interview with The Week Gita’s father Mr Gopinath revealed that she didn’t always score high in school until grade 7.

The girl who used to score 45 per cent till class seven, started scoring 90 per cent. I never asked my kids to study, and had not put any restrictions on them. Their friends came home, stayed over to study and play. Till SSLC, both my girls used to go to bed by 7.30pm and wake up early. After school, Gita joined Mahajana PU college in Mysuru, and pursued science. Later, though her marks were good enough for engineering and medicine, she decided to do BA (Hons) in economics,” said Gita’s father Gopinath to The Week.

It’s heartwarming to see a woman of such a high caliber enjoying the simple things in life. The chief economist shared a snapshot that will resonate with most Indians. The long list of comments below her post affirms that.
