Harry and Markle Make Shocking Announcement of Stepping Down As Senior Royal Members
The statement released by the Buckingham Palace read, “We intend to step back as 'senior' members of the royal family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen.”
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have created waves in the British Royal Family including the world media by their recent shocking declaration.
Prince Harry and Meghan have decided to step down as senior members of the royal family. What’s more dismaying is that the iconoclasts have decided without consulting the head of the family- Queen Elizabeth II as well as Harry’s father Prince Charles.
The statement released by the Buckingham Palace read, “We intend to step back as 'senior' members of the royal family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen.”
They added, “We have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution.”
It is being said that the atmosphere in the Buckingham palace is tense, disappointing and that of hurt.” Especially members of the Royal Monarch are skeptical about the new changes.
There are not one but many significant reasons for this decision. One of them being- the intense media scrutiny on the pair. Handling the spotlight and the negativity that came along with it was not easy especially for Meghan. Markle was constantly under media glare right from the start when the royal wedding took place, to the birth of their adorable son Archie. Comparisons were drawn at every crucial juncture of their lives and every move of theirs was scrutinized.
When ITV television’s Tom Brady questioned Meghan if her life had “really been a struggle” and if she was “not really ok”, she simply replied, “Yes.” When Harry was asked whether his wife was facing the same media pressures as his mom faced, Harry said, “I will not be bullied into playing a game that killed my mum.”
The negative news coverage on the pair coerced Harry to file a lawsuit against certain publishers. The spotlight put a strain on the bond between the two brothers- Harry and Willam. Harry told Tom Bradby that both of them were now on “different paths” and they don’t see each other as often as they used to.
Evidently, the circumstances and challenges that the pair has been through have coerced them to step down from their present prominent positions.
The pair would strike a balance in spending time between the United Kingdom and North America. They would aim to become financially independent while simultaneously supporting the Queen. Their new role would also affect their long term relationship with the press.
It is now left to be seen how the couple will embark on their new journey and take up new roles. Will it be less daunting than their previous lifestyle as senior members of the royal family? Only time will reveal.
