India heartily welcomed four Cheetah cubs in the Kuno National Park wildlife sanctuary, Madhya Pradesh. They were born to one of the female Cheetahs named Siyaya that came to India from Namibia.
It is believed that the cubs were born five days ago however they were spotted only on Wednesday.
As part of a mission to increase the population of Cheetahs in India eight Cheetahs were brought to the country from Namibia last year.
Another twelve Cheetahs were brought to the country last month from South Africa.
This was done to increase the population of the world’s fastest land animal since its extinction in the country due to excess hunting and habitat loss. These cats can touch a speed of 70 mph to capture its prey.
The good news of the birth of the cubs was announced by Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav who said: “I congratulate the entire team of Project Cheetah for their relentless efforts in bringing back cheetahs to India and for their efforts in correcting an ecological wrong done in the past.”
He described the birth of the cubs as a “momentous” event.
The mother and the cubs are said to be healthy. In fact the mother hunted twice since she gave birth to the cubs.
This news comes three days after a Cheetah named Sasha died of a kidney ailment.
The last cheetah died in Koriya district of present-day Chhattisgarh in 1947. Cheetahs became officially extinct in India in 1952.
