Interesting Facts about World Book Day and Why It is Celebrated

World Book Day is being celebrated worldwide today and keeping the pandemic in mind the theme for this year is ‘To Share a Story.’

World Book Day, also known as ‘Copyright Day’ and ‘International Day of the Book’ was an initiative by UNESCO to promote the pleasures of reading and its significance in the society.

UNESCO chose 23 April as the World Book Day way back in 1995.

The original idea to create this annual event was of Spanish writer Vicente Clavel Andrés in honour of celebrated author Miguel de Cervantes.

Another key reason for choosing 23 April as the date was because many writers were born as well as died on this particular day which is pretty coincidental and uncanny.

World Book Day recognizes the impact books have in our society and how it plays a significant role in changing our social and cultural fabric.

The existence of World Book Day obviously wouldn’t have been possible without writers and publishers. This day acknowledges the significance of writers all over the world who’ve shared their nuggets of wisdom through their enigmatic and enchanting stories content for eons.

The three important sectors of the book industry- the publishers, the booksellers and the libraries cannot be missed out.

During the pandemic, the sale of books has doubled as apart from television, books were found to be a source of therapy, entertainment, and comfort for many individuals.

As part of the 2021 World Book Day celebrations, UNESCO encourages as many people to take part in the UNESCO #bookface challenge where participants need to take a picture with a book cover so that it blends with their own reality.
