Ira Khan Says Whatever You Do in Life Is Related to Your Mental Health

Once again, Ira Khan has brought attention to the ongoing issue of mental health. For those who are unaware, Ira Khan, the daughter of Aamir Khan, has been struggling with clinical depression for a period of four years.

Ira Khan Says Whatever You Do in Life Is Related to Your Mental Health

Ira Khan has yet again raised the ever concerning topic of mental health. For the unversed Aamir Khan’s daughter Ira Khan had been battling clinical depression for four years.

There were days when she cried for hours and didn’t eat for four days at a stretch. She was diagnosed with clinical depression in 2018.

“My mom pointed out that I didn’t want to be alive so I would just sleep my day away so that I would have fewer hours to live in a day”, she said. Not making healthy choices was another reason for her depression.

“Your mind is what ? Who are you as a person ? What relationships do you have? What do you want to do in your life? All of these things are your mental health. Your whole life is essentially mental health. We’re experiencing this world through our minds. Everything that you do is related to your mental health. So, why are we not taking our mental health seriously?”, Ira tells ETimes.

Things however changed for the better for Ira when she accepted that she has a disorder. Once the acceptance came, she began to do things that she was supposed to do. Things that were in her control! On a good note, she is more “functional and productive” now.

Ira has founded an NGO called Agastu foundation which provides support to people who are battling depression and other mental health challenges.

Regarding suicides, the statistics are scary, she says. At Agatsu they do a suicide prevention gatekeeper training. “We teach and train anybody to spot the signs”, she explained. Ira is an instructor in suicide prevention training.

Her father Aamir Khan helped her to start the foundation. He is on the advisory board as well as her mother Reena Dutta.
