OpenAI’s Billion-Dollar Power Play: The Race to Build the Future of AI Infrastructure

OpenAI’s multi-trillion partnerships with tech titans like NVIDIA, Oracle, and AMD mark its bold push toward creating a self-hosted, megascale AI infrastructure—the most ambitious data project in human history.

OpenAI’s Billion-Dollar Power Play: The Race to Build the Future of AI Infrastructure

OpenAI, the creators of ChatGPT, has been on an ambitious mission to fortify its position in the artificial intelligence ecosystem. The company has signed several groundbreaking agreements with major technology giants such as Oracle, NVIDIA, Samsung, and CoreWeave. Collectively valued at around $1 trillion, these partnerships are expected to grant OpenAI access to over 20 gigawatts of computing power, an enormous capacity equivalent to the energy output of approximately 20 nuclear reactors. This massive infrastructural leap signals OpenAI’s determination to scale up its AI capabilities beyond precedent.

Recently, the Sam Altman-led enterprise sealed another significant multi-year chip supply agreement with AMD. This strategic alliance could yield billions of dollars for AMD over time while providing OpenAI with an additional 6 gigawatts of computing strength. The collaboration underscores the company’s vision of creating a hyper-efficient and future-proof computational network.

Interestingly, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang appeared taken aback when asked about OpenAI’s collaboration with rival AMD during CNBC’s Squawk Box. He admitted he was “not really” aware of the partnership and was surprised that AMD had shrewdly given away 10 percent of its stock to OpenAI in exchange for assistance in developing next-generation AI GPUs. This unexpected revelation highlighted the competitive yet symbiotic nature of AI hardware alliances.

On the other hand, NVIDIA’s arrangement with OpenAI contrasts sharply with AMD’s. The World’s most valuable chipmaker has invested directly in OpenAI, making it a shareholder. Despite OpenAI’s long-standing reliance on NVIDIA’s advanced hardware, Huang stated this was the first time the chipmaker would sell its products directly to OpenAI. He emphasized that this partnership aligns with NVIDIA's advanced hardware. Huang stated this was the first time the chipmaker would sell its products directly to OpenAI. He emphasized that this partnership aligns with NVIDIA’s plan to help OpenAI evolve into a “self-hosted hyperscaler”, a term referring to companies that own and manage their own data centres at a colossal scale.

OpenAI’s revenue is far from reaching the trillion-dollar mark, but Altman remains confident that these visionary investments will yield exponential dividends. “If you’re building the biggest data center in the history of humankind, the biggest infrastructure project in history, you’ve got to be open to doing something else,” he remarked.
