Geet is a major Tik Tok sensation who has three channels on the banned platform where she teaches English, gives relationship advice, and motivational talks to more than 10 million followers.
She makes sure that she uploads 120 videos a day using her phone and a professional camera. The banning of Tik Tok and other Chinese apps has come as a big blow to her whose motivational videos were pretty popular on the platform.
She told BBC, “I was completely taken off guard when the news arrived. I mean, this is my life now. It's my full-time job.” Even her followers are extremely disappointed with the new changes.
“Who will motivate me now?” one user wrote.
Many of her followers used to dote on her inspiring talks. She was born in India and raised in Seattle where she studied engineering and then worked in a law firm. She returned to Delhi along with her parents to do social work with young children and high risk youth. Opening a Tik Tok account in February further expanded her work as she could reach a wider audience.
“Tik Tok is an extension of what I used to do. Now with a single video message I can reach out to many more people and try to help them,” she said.
Not only that she acquired her own “celebrity status” with her popular videos. An Uber driver recognized her in New Delhi and requested her to record a video for his son who was not paying attention to his studies.
For those who are not aware, Geet is paralysed waist down and is now confined to a wheel chair. She was only ten years when she met up with a serious accident. She was sleeping in the back seat of her parents’ car.
When she woke up she saw ambulances around her, she had injured her spinal chord. Soon she became a victim of depression. It is because of her parents’ enormous support and love that she went on to study engineering and then acquire a degree in law.
It was not long before she became a Tik Tok sensation. Through these online platforms she touched the lives of numerous people. Her topics revolve around domestic violence, mother-in-law and daughter relationships and child labour.
Her future on the online platform remains uncertain; however she has calmed her anxious followers with these words, “Don't worry. Don't lose courage. Let's wait. We think the issue will be resolved and we will meet again. Don't lose hope and don't do anything drastic.”
