UAE Accuses Iran of ‘Hostile Attack’ on Commercial Shipping
The UAE has accused Iran’s IRGC of attacking commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, calling the alleged incidents acts of piracy and warning of risks to regional stability and global energy supplies.
The United Arab Emirates has accused Iran of carrying out a “hostile Iranian attack” against commercial shipping, escalating tensions surrounding maritime traffic in the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
The UAE Foreign Ministry said Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) had targeted commercial vessels and described the alleged incidents as “acts of piracy.”
Abu Dhabi accused Tehran of using the Strait of Hormuz as a tool to exert economic pressure and threaten regional stability, amid continuing tensions between Iran and the United States and uncertainty over the future of commercial shipping through the waterway.
UAE Withholds Details of Alleged Attacks
UAE authorities did not identify the vessels allegedly targeted. They also did not disclose their cargoes, precise locations or the extent of any damage.
The lack of details means the circumstances surrounding the reported incidents remain unclear, including what type of attack was allegedly carried out and whether any crew members were injured.
The accusations are nevertheless significant because the Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most important energy and shipping chokepoints. Iran Yet to Respond
Iran's Foreign Ministry and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps had not immediately issued a response to the UAE's allegations.
