“Hey, Copilot!”: Microsoft’s Hands-Free AI Experience Takes Flight
Microsoft tests “Hey, Copilot!” voice activation, enabling hands-free AI use, alongside smarter settings and productivity-focused feature upgrades.
Over the past several months, Microsoft has been progressively integrating new AI-driven capabilities into Windows. In its latest development, the company is experimenting with an innovative way to activate Copilot. According to a recent blog post, users enrolled in the Windows Insider program can now simply say “Hey Copilot!” to initiate the virtual assistant.
The voice-triggered, opt-in functionality offers a truly hands-free experience, ideal for multitaskers and accessibility-minded users. However, it’s important to note that this feature works only when the device is unlocked. Much like familiar assistants such as Apple’s Siri, Google’s Gemini, or Samsung’s Bixby, Copilot responds to the “Hey, Copilot!” command by launching a Voice Floating UI at the bottom of the screen, accompanied by a soft chime or a spoken reply from the assistant.
That said, the feature isn’t active by default. To enable it, users need to open the Copilot app, tap the avatar icon located in the bottom-left corner, and head into Settings. From there, scroll down until you find the ‘Voice mode’ option and flip the toggle labeled “Listen for Hey, Copilot to start a conversation.”
When engaged in a dialogue with Copilot, the voice interface becomes visible. If you wish to wrap up the conversation, you can either click the “X” button or simply wait, Copilot will automatically disengage after a few moments of inactivity.
Notably, the wake word detection is handled locally on the device, ensuring a measure of privacy-consciousness. However, because Copilot’s replies often depend on online data, an active internet connection is still required. Currently, the “Hey, Copilot” feature is exclusive to devices with English set as the display language.
In related updates, Microsoft has recently enhanced the Settings app, allowing users to conduct searches using natural language, a step toward more cognizant computing. Additionally, the revamped “Click To Do” feature now supports helpful tools like summarizing content, rewriting text, or crafting bulleted lists, adding a new level of functional elegance to user workflows.
Microsoft’s efforts suggest a broader movement toward more sensorial, context-aware, and anthropocentric digital experiences, emphasizing efficacy, ergonomics, and seamless interactivity. This trend reflects the company’s goal to make AI not just useful, but symbiotic with everyday computing.
