40 Migrants Found Safe inside a Refrigerator Truck in Greece

More than 40 people were found alive inside a refrigerated truck in northern Greece. During regular check local police found out that all the people inside the freeze were migrants and were taken to Turkey, the driver of the truck has been arrested.

According to the initial investigation, all the migrants are found to be of Afghan origin. Inspite of suffocating situations, they didn’t suffer serious illness and most of them are in good condition. Seven people had to receive first aid from a local hospital. For security reasons, all the migrants were taken directly to a nearby police station for identification. 

The local police speaking to media said, “The truck contained men and boys. Identifying their nationality will require a couple of days”. They also added, that “the refrigeration system had not been turned on and the migrants were uninjured”.

During a regular check-up, the police on the Egnatia motorway between the towns of Xanthi and Komotini stopped the truck and found that the truck contains a refrigerator and it has more than 40 people inside it.

The arrested driver said he is from Georgia. The police are also trying to find out a second man from Turkey in connection with the case.

The discovery came amidst protest after the recovery of 40 dead bodies from a refrigerated truck in Britain last month, highlighting the risks of illegal migrant routes to Europe. All the dead were believed to be Vietnamese nationals. They are found dead in a refrigerator on the back of a truck, 20 miles outside of London.

Greece has the highest number of asylum seekers and the arrival figures since 2016, is nearly one million people. In 2016 there was a controversial deal between the EU and Turkey, which stemmed the flow of more people into the country. 

A large number of migrants arrive daily overflowing camps on Greek islands that face Turkey. In the camps over 34,000 people are staying and most of them are living in the deplorable conditions.

On Monday, a two-year-old girl from Iraq died when a car on the island of Chios hit her. She was also a migrant. 

Routine checks on the trucks and other vehicles on the highway have been increased recently, following a number of incidents involving the migrants from different countries were being smuggled through Greece in such pathetic conditions like animals.
