60mn to 148mn Jobs Needed to Sustain India’s Population, Claims IMF Chief Gita Gopinath
IMF MD, Gita Gopinath stressed India to generate more jobs to manage the population growth. Appeals to create 148mn jobs by 2030.
Managing Director of IMG, Gita Gopinath claimed that India needs to generate close to 148 million jobs by 2030 to manage the population. India's population growth is quite fast and the need for new jobs will help regulate the population.
“If you look at India’s projections in terms of population growth, India will have to create anywhere between 60 million to 148 million additional jobs cumulatively between now and 2030. We are already in 2024, so in a short period we have to create a lot of jobs,” claimed Gita Gopinath.
In an event at the Delhi School of Economics, she claimed that certain policies and protocols should be maintained to achieve employment that will support the population's growth. She further said that private investment would help commensurate the current GDP growth.
Currently, India holds an employment rate of 46.90 percent which is not adequate in terms of the population. Lack of skills and education is one of the major challenges and people take up the primary sector as their sole profession.
