San Rechal, a renowned model and social media voice, died by suicide in Pondicherry on Sunday. Despite initial treatment at a government hospital facility, she was transferred to the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER), where she ultimately passed away.
According to law enforcement officials, San had allegedly ingested a significant number of pills shortly after visiting her father’s residence. Emergency medical attention was sought immediately, but her deteriorating condition prompted multiple hospital transfers. At JIPMER, despite exhaustive attempts, her life could not be saved.
Authorities speculate that the underlying cause may be a combination of financial turmoil and personal distress. Sources indicated that San had liquidated most of her jewellery in recent months to finance her career goals. She had reportedly approached her father for assistance, but he declined, citing obligations toward her brother.
A handwritten note recovered from her belongings absolved everyone of blame, but due to the nuanced circumstances around her recent marriage, a Tahsilder-level investigation has been initiated to examine potential domestic factors that may have exacerbated her emotional duress.
San Rechal was not just a familiar face in campaigns and photoshoots; she was an ardent advocate against chromatic elitism. Winning the Miss Poducherry crown in 2022, she utilises her influence to address the entrenched prejudice against darker skin tones, especially in the glamour-driven circuits of cinema and fashion.
