Amid rising waves of anti-Indian sentiment directed at immigrants working in the United States, largely amplified during the Donald Trump administration, New York Governor Kathy Hochul recently took a heartening step in the opposite direction. She visited the bakery shop of Indian chef Rakesh Nayak, owner of the much-loved Mister Croissant Bakery & Cafe in Middletown. The Democrat leader shared the interaction on social media, celebrating the positive imprint immigration continues to leave on local communities.
"Rakesh Nayak came to our country to build a better life, and he's deeply invested in his community. That's the American dream," Hochul wrote in an Instagram post.
"Next time you're in Middletown, stop by Mr. Croissant. You won't be disappointed."
During her visit, Hochul was given a bag filled with delicate sweet treats and praised Nayak’s artistry, calling his creations "extraordinary." She even asked about the inspiration behind his craft.
Nayak responded with passion: "I have been working in the baking and pastry industry for 21 years. I have lived in London, Singapore and Paris, so I got the experience working with one of the best in the industry. So I am expressing myself to showcase what pastry can do."
Explaining his decision to open his venture in Middletown, he added: "I noticed the town was growing and we had a lot of opportunity. I found this is the best time and best place to open Mister Croissant."
To this, Hochul warmly replied: "Well we are delighted you are here. You are adding a lot of love and flavour to downtown. Continue to grow."
