Neena Gupta’s daughter Designer Masaba Gupta is proud of her “mixed” ethnicity and the fact that it had made her different. She spoke about this on her Insta profile. The fondness towards her mixed ethnicity doubled when Kamala Harris became the Vice President-elect of the United States of America.
Kamala Harris emerging victorious in the US elections coerced Masaba to rethink and talk about her mixed race upbringing and experiences related to it. It made her rethink that “being different” is good.
Growing up she felt that she was the “only one of her kind” that is half Indian and half Caribbean. “I used to think wow, masaba there possibly can’t be more like you out there”, she wrote.
She felt it was so much easier for someone to blend in with the crowd than to be “different.” Things gradually began to change when she visited her father Vivian Richard’s place Antigua where she discovered that there are many more like her.
Kamala Harris’s victory just reaffirms the fact that the “being different” factor could push you towards greener pastures in life. You could use it as a stepping stone to achieve your dreams. The colour of your skin cannot be a hindrance to your dreams and goals.
As Masaba rightly puts it, you can break the shackles of skin colour and racism that people box you in by sheer hard work just like Kamala did.
She finally concludes her post with these inspiring words, “Madame Vice President, the first black woman / the first person of south Asian descent & more importantly just the first woman to be VP elect- I salute you & I plan to go back to my drawing board tonight & sketch bigger, brighter dreams for myself and the women who will come after me...mixed girls, just like us.” #kamalaharris #america #election2020
