Al- Qaeeda Chief Ayman al-Zawahiri Was a Qualified Surgeon and Excelled in Studies

President Joe Biden made an announcement after Al- Qaeeda Chief Ayman al-Zawahiri- the mastermind behind the 9/11 attacks was killed in a US drone strike in Kabul, Afghanistan. 

In a televised address Biden said that Zawahiri was deeply involved in planning the 9/11 attack. Biden who was recovering from Covid gave the green signal for the air strike that killed the terrorist leader over the weekend. 

Now, “Justice has been delivered and this terrorist leader is no more.” 

The President hoped that Zawahiri's death would bring closure to families of the 3,000 people killed in the US on 9/11.

According to a senior administration official  Chief Ayman al-Zawahiri was on the balcony of his house in Kabul when the US troop attacked him with two Hellfire missiles early in the morning on July 31.  

“We are not aware of him ever leaving the safe house. We identified Zawahiri on multiple occasions for sustained periods of time on the balcony of where he was ultimately struck,” the official said.

The US official also said that Zawahiri's presence in the Afghan capital Kabul was a “clear violation”of a deal the Taliban had signed with the US in Doha in 2020 that paved the way for the US withdrawal from Afghanistan.

Biden said that there were no casualties in the operation. 

Zawahri was an Egyptian born physician and theologian who succeeded Osama Bin Laden after his death. He comes from a prestigious and prosperous family and became the leader of the terrorist group Al Qaeda from June 2011. 

The Al-Qaeda Chief excelled in studies, loved poetry and ironically hated “violent sports.” He studied medicine at Cairo University and earned a master’s degree in surgery. He served as a surgeon in the Egyptian army for three years. Following that he opened his own clinic. 

Zawahri was greatly influenced by Islamic scholar Sayyid Qutb’s Islamic views and made it his mission to  "to put Qutb's vision into action” after Qutb was executed for conspiracy by the Egyptian government. He eventually formed the ‘Egyptian Islamic Jihad.”

When his organisation merged with Bin Laden’s organisation, he became Bin Laden’s personal adviser and physician.
