Ali Fazal on Embracing Guddu Pandit Fame and Moving Forward with Gratitude
Ali Fazal, known for his powerful portrayal of Guddu Pandit in Mirzapur, shares his thoughts on audience loyalty, international appeal, and his upcoming film Metro...In Dino.
New Delhi: Since Mirzapur first streamed in 2018, Ali Fazal’s role as Guddu Pandit has captured widespread admiration. Over three intense seasons, his character has evolved remarkably, from an ambitious youth to a brooding gangster tangled in a cycle of vengeance and power. The depth and volatility of Guddu’s transformation have firmly cemented the role as a turning point in Fazal’s professional trajectory, turning him into a household name.
Currently, the actor is immersed in promotions for Metro...In Dino. In an exclusive chat with NDTV, Fazal addressed whether being repeatedly linked to Mirzapur overshadows his other creative pursuits.
What’s Happening
Fazal welcomed the enduring connection fans have to his iconic role. He shared that such associations are inevitable in a global industry where audiences often latch onto one defining performance.
Ali Fazal told NDTV, "No, it doesn't bother me. Why should it? I'm constantly doing Mirzapur, and it's only growing. I'm glad people connect with that. In other countries, people connect with my International work, and that's a separate audience that I have. So I know how people can tend to connect with you only through that one character. And so people always remember you by that in one part of the world."
He further elaborated, "With my International audience, they react to the work they have seen in the West. Then that becomes the only thing they are circling back to. That is how people react in another part of the world. It becomes a benchmark for the next. I've seen that as well. So I guess it's a mixed bag of people appreciating at the end of the day. In a society filled with angry people, I don't think I would mind any kind of appreciation for the work we do."
The legacy of Guddu Pandit
Fazal’s Guddu pandit is a character layered with grif, rage, and resilience. After a devastating personal loss, Guddu’s journey becomes one of survival and revenge. He enters the grim world of politics, seeking justice against Kaleen Bhaiya (played by Pankaj Tripathi), the ruthless kingpin of Mirzapur. His emotional wounds add complexity to his brutal actions, creating a narrative that resonates with viewers deeply.
