At the end of 2018, the company’s records show, Amazon has directly employed over 60,000 people in India. The number is about 10% of its global employee strength of 6.1 lakh employees.

Good news for individuals, who are looking for jobs in India as Amazon India has as many as 1,300 vacancies in the country, which is the highest in the Asia Pacific. The number of openings is three times higher to the openings available in China. Only Germany has as many openings as India, outside the USA. The number is high, despite the government of India’s recent policies that might affect Amazon e-commerce business in the country.

The number of Amazon’s vacancy in India is across different departments, businesses including technology with different roles. India has 1,300 openings, while China has 467 job openings and Japan has 381 openings. Australia and Singapore follow with 250 and 174 openings, respectively.

Amazon in India is expanding significantly beyond its cloud and e-commerce business, into the areas, which includes payments, content (Prime video), voice-assistant (Alexa), customer support and food retail. At the end of 2018, the company’s records show, Amazon has directly employed over 60,000 people in India. The number is about 10% of its global employee strength of 6.1 lakh employees. Now with the new hiring policy, most of the fresh hiring will be in Bengaluru, Chennai and Hyderabad.

According to Amazon, India is a strong talent location. Amazon spokesperson says, Amazon teams in India work on various complex businesses with diverse challenges in order to innovate and create efficient solutions that has helped various businesses in India also in other parts of the world which includes Amazon websites across the world that support payments, transportation and digital products and services like the Kindle family of tablets, e-readers and the store.

She also adds, “With our constant growth, we are always looking for some exceptional talent across levels in areas of software development, product & marketing, machine learning, quality assurance, web development, product management, supply chain, content development, operations, studio & photography and for other positions in the India consumer business. We have created thousands of skilled and semi-skilled jobs in India over the past decade”.

Meanwhile, according to Industry sources, Amazon is going to use this employment generation internal policy to push its case in the ongoing policy discussion with the government of India. As the government has recently sought clarification on FDI in e-commerce, which is going to force the Seattle based e-commerce giant to change its business model in India.

The new rules seek to make e-commerce players, purely technology-oriented platforms with less control over the sellers on the platform, come into effect from next month.
