Amul Gets Criticized for Their Recent Amul Illustration Involving the ‘Joker’

‘Joker’ Star Joaquin Phoenix’s intriguing speech that covered several areas such as environment, animal cruelty, food and nature won hearts world over.

In his powerful speech, he admitted that he was thinking a lot about the distressing issues affecting us. He elaborated that we’ve become disconnected from the natural world. “We feel entitled to artificially inseminate a cow. And when she gives birth, we steal her baby”, he explained.

He added that human beings are so “inventive and ingenious” that systems of change that would be beneficial to all beings can be well implemented. He explained that love should be our guiding principle in the process.

Joaquin’s speech has come up at the most appropriate time when the world is facing severe crises be it in the form of viruses, earthquakes, bushfires, water scarcity, pollution, war so on and so forth.

Not only did Joaquin deserve an Oscar for ‘Joker’, but he also deserved an Oscar for his honest speech which was so deep and thoughtful.

His reflections resonated with people and they shared it on all social media platforms. Amul India also decided to join the bandwagon. They came up with an Amul Topical where the iconic Amul girl was seen smearing butter on the Joker’s face.

Here’s the Amul ad in question:

The new Amul Topical seemed insensitive! It drew flak from the ‘The People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and other animal rights organizations. PETA found the tribute insensitive as the actor is a vegan and doesn’t consume dairy.

They decided to take the company to task for coming up with distasteful content. Was this an appropriate illustration especially when the Oscar winner had just spoken about how unconsciously our actions can have drastic effects on animals and the natural resources?

This is how PETA took Amul India to task.

At a time when we as a human race are dealing with grave issues concerning the health and the environment as a whole, public personalities are coming up with various ideas on how we can collectively tackle the issues.

They are sharing their personal opinions on public platforms to reach a wider audience. Above all, these ideas are being shared in good interest.

By creating such illustrations, we are mocking the ideas that are being shared. If we can’t come up with solutions at least we shouldn’t mock people who are coming up with solutions. Being a recognized and a reputed company Amul needs to use discretion while coming up with a content of sensitive nature.

Not only PETA, but many Twitter users found the poster disrespectful.

Amul’s illustrations that were created in the years gone by have a touch of humour in them and people do enjoy reading them. They are witty and engaging. That said, certain subjects need to be approached more sensitively. Guess Amul India will be pay heed after this unpleasant episode.
