Asian Games 2018: Tejinder Pal Singh Wins Gold Setting a New Record in Shot Put, Dedicates to His Cancer-Stricken Father

Congratulations Mr. Tejinder Pal Singh Toor who struck gold in men’s shot put. And it was his fifth throw that went 20.75 meters, won him what he deserved, as well as, a gold for India in Asian Games 2018.

But, this time his journey to the Asian Games was quite a challenging one. The athlete was almost negative about his participation, however, it was his coach, MS Dhillon who convinced him.

Tejinder’s father is a cancer patient, and has been battling with the lethal disease since last 2 years. Initially, Tejinder was quite apprehensive and didn’t want to stay away from his father who has been struggling for survival in a Punjab hospital, considering the circumstances.

As published in an interview in The Times of India Tejinder said, “This medal is my biggest achievement because a lot of sacrifices have been made. For the last two years, my father (Karam Singh) has been battling with cancer. My family though never let me get distracted. They allowed me to chase my dream. A lot of sacrifices have been made by my family and friends and all those have paid today.”

Undoubtedly, his hard work and dedication have paid off and that too in a glorious way! “I had just one aim in mind. I wanted to clear 21 meters. I did not think of gold. But I am happy with this. I was trying hard to break the national record for the last 2-3 years and it happened today, that too with a Meet record”, said the shot put gold achiever after he broke the record set by Om Prakash Karhana (20.69m).

Tejinder, the 23-year-old athlete who wholeheartedly acknowledged his family’s contribution, support, and sacrifices behind his golden success at Jakarta, dedicated the triumph and the gold, to his father.
