In Barmer, Rajasthan, a protest sparked by the killing of two Chinkaras, a species of gazelle revered by locals, has intensified, drawing attention to the deep-seated frustration of the community. The protesters have issued a three-day ultimatum to local officials to either deliver substantial progress in the investigation or face an escalation of the protest, including road blockades.

Preliminary findings suggest the gazelles were slain early Saturday, but the assailants, likely alarmed, abandoned the carcasses beneath a bridge. Chinkaras are often targeted by poachers for their meat, hides, and horns, making them a frequent victim of illegal wildlife trafficking.

“More gazelles have been killed, but the hunters could not take these with them. The forest department is saying they need time. They do nothing. There are no arrangements for the treatment of animals,” a protester declared. “We demand that the criminals be arrested at the earliest. We will not stop this protest till the arrests are made.”

In response, officials claim they are expediting efforts to track the culprit. Surveillance footage from nearby CCTV cameras is being reviewed meticulously to identify those responsible.
