BSNL Switches on Nationwide VoWiFi, Ushering a Quiet Connectivity Renaissance
BSNL has enabled VoWiFi nationwide, allowing free Wi-Fi-based calling across India. The move strengthens rural connectivity, reduces network congestion, and advances the state-run operator’s telecom modernisation efforts.
Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has formally activated Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWiFi) services across all telecom circles in India, marking a significant inflection point in the public-sector operator’s long-running network rejuvenation journey. With this move, BSNL narrows the functional gap with private incumbents such as Airtel and Reliance Jio, which have already mainstreamed Wi-Fi calling.
VoWiFi, commonly known as Wi-Fi Calling, allows subscribers to place and receive voice calls and text messages using a Wi-Fi network instead of relying solely on cellular towers. For users located in signal-starved interiors, subterranean spaces, thick-walled buildings, or geographically isolated regions, the service offers a practical workaround to persistent coverage limitations.
According to BSNL, the nationwide activation is not merely an incremental feature launch but a cornerstone of its network modernisation blueprint. The technology operates on an IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) architecture, enabling seamless call continuity as devices transition between mobile networks and Wi-Fi access points without call drops or user intervention.

A notable advantage of BSNL’s VoWiFi implementation is its non-intrusive user experience. Calls are routed through the subscriber’s existing mobile number and default dialler, eliminating the need for third-party applications or alternate identities. This preserves familiarity while quietly enhancing reliability.
The service is particularly consequential for rural and semi-urban geographies, where sparse tower density often constrains call quality. By piggybacking on stable broadband connections such as BSNL Bharat Fibre or other Wi-Fi sources, VoWiFi transforms fixed internet infrastructure into an auxiliary voice network.
BSNL also highlighted that VoWiFi contributes to network decongestion, easing pressure on cellular spectrum during peak hours. Importantly, the service is being extended without additional charges, reinforcing its accessibility-first positioning.
Most contemporary smartphones already support Wi-Fi Calling. Users can activate the feature through their device settings, while assistance regarding handset compatibility is available via BSNL customer service centres or the dedicated helpline 1800-1503.
While private telecom operators have offered similar functionality for years, BSNL’s nationwide rollout represents a symbolic recalibration, signalling intent, technological parity, and renewed competitiveness in India’s evolving digital communications landscape.
