Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost Makes History as the First American Pope, Leo XIV

As white smoke rose from the Sistine Chapel, signalling that the College of Cardinals had reached a decision, the bells of St. Peter’s Basilica rang out in celebration. Pilgrims and faithful gathered in St. Peter’s Square waved flags from around the globe, chanting, “Viva il Papa!”—"Long live the Pope!"
From the balcony overlooking the crowd, Pope Leo XIV began his first address in Italian and Spanish, offering a heartfelt blessing: “Peace be with you all.” His words emphasized compassion and unity, as he spoke of staying “close to those who suffer” and prioritizing peace and solidarity within the Church.
Born in Chicago, Prevost studied mathematics at Villanova University before earning a degree in theology from the Catholic Theological Union of Chicago. He joined the Order of Saint Augustine and dedicated much of his early ministry to missionary work in Peru, where he served in various leadership roles.
From 2015 to 2023, he served as the Bishop of Chiclayo, while also holding important positions in the Peruvian Episcopal Conference and Vatican congregations.
In September 2023, Pope Francis elevated him to the College of Cardinals, assigning him the title Cardinal Deacon of Santa Monica.
Leo XIV shares many of Pope Francis’ priorities, particularly in areas such as climate change, migrant and refugee rights, and care for the poor. However, his stance on LGBTQ+ issues remains less clearly defined.
His choice of the name Leo XIV links him to a tradition of popes known for strength, doctrinal clarity, and Church reform; a reflection of his reputation as a thoughtful and principled leader.
With violence and political unrest rising globally, there are high expectations for Pope Leo XIV’s leadership. Many hope he will guide the Church by honoring its rich traditions while engaging meaningfully with the complex challenges of the modern world.
