Charlize Theron Says Gaining 50 Pounds for Upcoming Movie ‘Tully’ Was Challenging

Charlize Theron gained 50 pounds to play an overweight mother in her new film ‘Tully’ which is all set to hit the theatres next month. The transformation was challenging for her, says the talented actress.

Charlize Theron’s upcoming movie ‘Tully’ is about a friendship of a mother of three and her babysitter. The mother Marlo played by Theron is completely stressed out after giving birth to her third child. Marlo hires a nanny named Tully played by Mackenzie Davis. Tully is the one person who begins to understand Theron’s depression and decides to help her out. The movie is an American comedy-drama directed by Jason Reitman. Besides Charlize Theron, the movie stars Mackenzie Davis, Mark Duplass, and Ron Livingston.

Gaining 50 pounds was not fun

Charlize Theron said that altering her diet for her role sounds like a lot of fun, however, eating so much sugar took a toll on her body.  She told entertainment tonight I gained close to 50 pounds for this film. I just I wanted to feel what this woman felt, and I think that was a way for me to get closer to her and get into that mindset."

Her body had to endure a lot of side effects. The first three weeks were fun. Theron would gorge on two milkshakes. “The first three weeks are always fun because you're just like a kid in a candy store.” After a few weeks when it becomes a job it is not fun anymore. She had to wake up two in the morning and have a cup of cold macaroni and cheese to maintain her weight. “I would wake up and I would just eat it… I would just, like, shove it in my throat. It's hard to maintain that weight."

She ate a lot of processed foods and consumed a lot of sugar to the extent that she got depressed. It was not fun being around her in the film, she said. Theron had put on weight earlier, for her role in ‘Monster’ but she was only 27 that time. You know your body at 27 is a little different than your body at 43, and my doctor made sure to make me very aware of that. Like, you are 42, calm down, you're not dying, all good."

Theron’s transformation in the movie is amazing and it just goes to prove how hard actors have to work on their bodies just to enact a particular role. It is not only about the physical transformation but it is also about how the transformation affects their mental health. And no matter how difficult it gets for them, actors have to work hard to do justice to the role.

The movie is all set to hit theatres on May 4 and here’s the official trailer of  ‘Tully.’
