Chief Justice Yashwant Verma's House Was Raided, and Cash Found

Supreme Court of India to Probe the matter of CJI Yashwant Singh as piles of currency were found at his home after a fire started in his residence. Currency was found in the storeroom of CJI’s residence. The money in the room was unaccounted for and was totally off the record. This has created a sense of non-transparency and a group of CJI will be probing the matter and bring out the result. Sanjeev Khanna, Chief Justice of India to probe the matter and examine the case.

According to reports, the Police Commissioner got in touch with Chief Justice DK Upadhyay at around 4:50 P.m. shortly after the fire had started. On getting informed, CJI immediately made himself available and took action. As per the commissioner's report to CJI Upadhyay, a guard of the house witnessed some half-burned papers. In a second communication made in Hindi, four sacks of half-burnt currency were found by the guard.

The publications made seem hidden and the confidentiality is maintained throughout. Also, no one has yet informed the authorities about who cleaned the debris from the house after the fire. Moreover, disclosure of the [person taking the picture was also barred. The documents further reveal if police had sealed the room or if anyone was allowed to enter the premises.

CJI Verma has claimed that he was not aware of the amount and was out to Bhopal for work with his wife. He also claimed that that not she nor his family was given the sack of money. He strongly disagreed with the claims by stating “the insinuation, if made, that we removed currency. The alleged removal is not known to us. None of my staff removed any article, currency or cash in any form”.

The report sent to CJI Upadhyay did not mention the whereabouts of the money and also did not inform about the CCTV footage and how the fire had started raising suspicion about the entire incident. The police commissioner's report also claimed that the room adjacent to the CRPF guard room used to be kept locked and is different from the Publications.

Justice Verma also informed that the room was primarily used for keeping waste materials or often for items that are no longer used. Moreover, the storeroom was quite distant from the CJI’s house. The Secretary attached to CJI Verma in his report mentioned that both of them had gone to the room on the night of 15th March and he mentioned that the room was not kept locked.

Concluding the report, CJI Upadhya ruled out the chances of outsiders and suggested that it could be someone from within the premises. Further examinations will determine the culprits and necessary actions will be taken.
