Chilling Silence: Inside Sonam Raghuvanshi’s Life in Shillong Jail After Honeymoon Homicide
Sonam Raghuvanshi, accused of murdering her husband during their honeymoon, remains unrepentant after a month in Shillong jail. Isolated from family, she adjusts quietly while her crime continues to stun.
New Delhi: Sonam Raghuvanshi, infamously linked to the horrific honeymoon murder of her husband Raja Raghuvanshi in Meghalaya, has completed a full month behind bars at the Shillong jail. Yet, according to internal sources, she has displayed neither remorse nor emotion. What’s even more startling is that not a single family member has reached out or visited her since her incarceration.
Despite being enveloped in the rigid confines of jail life, Sonam reportedly acclimatized to her environment. Sources mention that she has harmonized with fellow female inmates and complies strictly with the facility’s daily routines. Her punctuality and adherence to the jail manual have made her presence almost unobtrusive.
However, beneath this surface calm lies a disconcerting quietude. Sonam remains
Entirely reticent about her past, never disclosing anything about the chilling crime or her personal journey. She is currently housed in a section near the warden’s office and shares her quarters with two other under-trial prisoners, forming a cluster of relative anonymity.
Thus far, Sonam has not been allocated any official duties within the prison premises. Authorities plan to induct her into rehabilitative activities soon, including sewing and other vocational skill-enhancement tasks. Interestingly, she is permitted access to a television daily, a privilege aimed at mental engagement for inmates.
Although prison policies allow family visitations and telephonic contact, Sonam’s family has remained conspicuously absent. This detachment underscores the social fissures her crime has ignited. Of the 496 inmates in Shillong jail, only 20 are women. Among them, Sonam is the second individual facing murder charges. To ensure safety and discipline, she is kept under continuous surveillance via CCTV.
The Honeymoon murder Case
Sonam and Raja tied the knot on May 11. Barely nine days later, they embarked on what should have been a celebratory trip to Meghalaya, holding just a one-way ticket. For three days, the couple journeyed across the northeastern terrain before mysteriously vanishing. Alarmed by their absence, family members sought police assistance.
The investigation took a grim turn on June 2 when Raja’s body was discovered in a gorge, revealing a ghastly crime. On June 7, Sonam was found unconscious at a roadside dhaba in Ghazipur. She was taken to a nearby medical facility and later surrendered to authorities. Her accomplices, including her clandestine lover Raj, were subsequently arrested.
Following the scandal, Sonam’s brother declared a total severance of familial bonds and affirmed his allegiance to Raja’s bereaved kin, offering to support their pursuit of justice.
