Cockroach Found in Srisailam Temple Laddoo Sparks Outcry, Temple Denies Allegation

New Delhi: An unexpected controversy unfolded at the revered Srisailam Devasthanam temple in Andhra Pradesh on Sunday when a devotee alleged that he found a cockroach inside a laddoo offered as prasadam. The devotee, identified as Saraschandra K, shared a video online, showing what appeared to be a dead cockroach lodged in the center of the sacred sweet.

Outraged by the discovery, Mr. Saraschandra promptly submitted a written complaint to the temple’s executive officer. In his grievance, he highlighted concerns over staff negligence and urged officials to address the matter seriously.

“On June 29, I visited the Srisailam Devasthanam and in the laddoo 'prasadam' I found an insect which is a cockroach. The Devasthanam staff is negligent while making 'prasadams'. Kindly take a note and sort out the issue,” he wrote.

The incident quickly drew attention, with many expressing concern about quality standards in temple kitchens. The laddoo, a staple offering at many temples across South India, holds spiritual significance and is considered sacred by devotees. Any taint found in such offerings naturally and scrutiny.

However, in response to the viral claim, temple officials swiftly issued a rebuttal. Srinivasa Rao, the executive officer of the Srisailam Devasthanam temple, firmly denied the allegation. According to him, the temple’s preparation process is meticulously organized with protocols in place to ensure hygienic and clean production.

“The laddoo are and will be made under the constant supervision of staff at the preparation center. There is no possibility of a cockroach being found in it,” Mr. Rao stated.

He further reassured devotees that there was no need to panic and appealed for continued faith in the sacredness and safety of the prasadam. The temple, known for its spiritual fravitas and vast football, places significant emphasis on hygiene in its offerings, he emphasized.

Despite the temple’s assertions, the incident has triggered a wider conversation around food safety, particularly in large-scale religious institutions. Questions are now being raised about whether more stringent inspections, quality pledge practices, or independent reconciliations should be implemented to uphold trust.

The controversy has also attracted attention on social platforms, where opinions remain divided—some supporting the devotee’s claim, while others believe the temple’s long-standing reputation for holiness and cleanliness should not be easily questioned.

As of now, it remains unclear whether an investigation will be launched or if further proof will surface. Meanwhile, the incident serves as a reminder that even revered places must remain vigilant about quality and consumer trust.
