What’s astonishing is that achievement was realized with just $6 million worth of computer power. In comparison, industry giant Meta reportedly spent $ 60 million on its latest AI project. This resource-savvy strategy makes cutting-edge AI development more accessible, according to investor Chris V. Nicholson, who emphasized how a $6 million access threshold could elevate emerging innovators in the tech world.

Most leading AI firms operate supercomputers equipped with upwards of 16,000 chips. By contrast, DeepSeek managed to achieve remarkable results using approximately 2,000 Nvidia chips. The company attributes its success to refined and efficient training methodologies developed in response to the limited availability of advanced chips in China.

Turning Constraints into Opportunity

Despite tighter U.S. regulations aimed at curbing China’s access to advanced technology, DeepSeek has effectively leveraged its existing resources. Backed by quantitative trading firm High Flyer, the startup acquired Nvidia chips before the restrictions and built a competitive team by offering lucrative pay packages and opportunities for innovative research. Interestingly, DeepSeek has also hired individuals from non-technical fields, such as poetry and liberal arts, to enrich its AI’s understanding of diverse subjects and complex situations.
