Delhi Burning over CAA as Trump Visits India

Seven people have been killed including a police constable and more than 100 injured in Delhi in the protests against the new citizenship law, as the US President Donald Trump is on his first official visit to the country. Meanwhile, Section 144 has been imposed in Northeast Delhi, the epicentre of the violence for one month.

Northeast Delhi on Monday witnessed large scale violence when anti and pro CAA protesters got into a violent scuffle that escalated from stone-throwing to vehicles being set on fire on roads. In a few hours the violence spread most of the Delhi including the areas Bhajanpura and Chand Bagh.

Since Saturday night hundreds of women had been carrying out a silent protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act or CAA near the Jaffrabad Metro Station.

On Sunday afternoon, BJP leader Kapil Mishra posts a tweet inviting those who are supporting the CAA near Maujpur Chowk, saying the gathering as an answer to the anti-CAA blockade at Jaffrabad.

By evening there were reports of scuffle between the pro and anti-CAA protesters that resulted in stone-throwing. In order to control the violent mob, Police had to fire teargas shells. The violence then turns uncontrollable, a man is seen holding a gun in his hand confronting a policeman on the streets of Delhi.

BJP leader Kapil Mishra once again tweets a video warning anti CAA protestors alongside Deputy Commissioner of Police Northeast Ved Prakash saying his supporters are only waiting till US President Donald Trump visit to India, after that they will not listen to anyone and they will ensure that all the roads blocked by anti-CAA protesters will be cleared.

Stone pelting continued till Monday evening, when the police managed to get things under control. At least 800 to 900 policemen and paramilitary personnel have been deployed on the Jaffrabad-Maujpur stretch in the aftermath of the violence.

Newly elected, two time Chief Minister of Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal, appeals to the central government to restore law and order. He later told reporters that, "There are not enough police on the streets [in the affected areas]. Local police are saying they are not getting orders from above to control the situation, and they are not able to take action."
