Delhi Crime Crackdown: Cop Held for Rs 51 Lakh Theft, Nigerian National Nabbed with Cocaine
A Head Constable was arrested for stealing cash and jewellery from a Maalkhana, while a Nigerian national was caught with 282g of cocaine in a separate anti-narcotics operation in Delhi.
In two separate yet equally startling incidents, law enforcement in Delhi has uncovered a breach of trust and a high-stakes drug bust, showcasing both internal lapses and external threats to the city’s security fabric.
Head Constable Khurshid has been apprehended by the Special Cell for the misappropriation of nearly ₹51 lakh in cash along with significant quantities of valuable jewellery from the Maalkhana located at Lodhi Road. Khurshid has recently been transferred to East Delhi, having earlier served at the same Maalkhana. The audacious theft took place on Friday night, triggering swift action by the Maalkhana in-charge, who promptly identified discrepancies and raised an alert.
Authorities reviewed CCTV footage from the premises, which revealed Khurshid’s unauthorized movements, leading to his prompt identification. Acting with urgency, the Special Cell arrested him the following day, curbing any further attempts to abscond or misplace evidence. The arrest underscores the importance of internal vigilance and the necessity for fortified custodial protocols within police departments.
In a completely unrelated incident, the Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) of the Delhi Police Crime Branch executed a meticulously planned operation in Old Mahabir Nagar, Tilak Nagar. This led to the apprehension of a Nigerian national, identified as David Leanne, who was found in possession of 282 grams of cocaine.
“The accused, David Leanne, was caught carrying a bag containing a yellow-coloured powdery substance. A field test conducted on-site by the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team confirmed the substance to be cocaine, classified as a commercial quantity under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act,” stated Deputy Commissioner of Police, ANTF (Crime Branch), Apoorva Gupta.
Acting on credible intelligence and under prolonged surveillance by the ANTF, the team cornered Leanne in the congested lanes of the area. The cocaine, concealed in a seemingly innocuous bag, was intended for distribution across the Delhi-NCR region, police suspect. The Crime Branch has registered a case, and further inquiries are underway to identify the wider syndicate potentially involved.
Both incidents serve as a reminder of the multifaceted challenges faced by law enforcement, from rogue insiders to international narcotics networks. As investigations deepen, these episodes highlight the significance of accountability, foresight, and inter-agency synergy in maintaining law and order.
