Delhi Metro Confirms First Fare Hike in 8 Years, Effective August 25
Delhi Metro has announced its first fare hike in eight years, effective August 25, 2025. Fares will rise by Re 1 to Rs 4, sparking commuter concerns and online criticism.
Travelling in the national capital via the Delhi Metro is about to get more expensive. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has officially announced a fare increase starting Monday, August 25. This marks the first rise in ticket prices after an eight-year gap, the last revision having been made in 2017.
Responding to a commuter’s query on social media, DMRC clarified that the revision would be nominal (minimal), with fares increasing by Re 1 to Rs 4 across all operational routes. In its official statement, DMRC wrote on X (formerly Twitter): “This is to confirm that Delhi Metro fares will be revised with effect from tomorrow, i.e., 25th August 2025. The revision will be nominal, with fares increasing by Re 1 to Rs 4. The fares on the Airport Line will increase by up to Rs 5.”
New Fare Structure
As per the updated slabs, the minimum fare for a short journey (0–2 km) will now be Rs 11. The following slabs will apply:
- Rs 21 for 2–5 km
- Rs 32 for 5–12 km
- Rs 43 for 12–21 km
- Rs 54 for 21–32 km
- Rs 64 for beyond 32 km
For Sundays and national holidays, reduced fares will apply, starting at Rs 11 for distances up to 5 km, and going up to Rs 54 for Journey over 32km.

Public Reactions
The announcement sparked mixed responses online. Many commuters questioned the rationale behind the fare hike. One user asked, “But why are you increasing the fare? What added facility or benefits would you be offering effective tomorrow?” Another complained, “I pay DMRC Rs 130 every day, now it will be Rs 140. You are adjusting inflation faster than our salary revision.” A third demanded more transparency, saying, “Please give a comprehensive chart. Why the stealthy increase!?”

Background
The last hike in 2017 was based on recommendations from the fourth Fare Fixation Committee (FFC). Until Sunday, August 24, the fare ranged from Rs 19 to Rs 60. With this revision, DMRC has attempted to balance operational costs with passenger affordability.
