Dhurandhar Returns to Cinemas with Subtle Alterations Following Official Advisory

Ranveer Singh’s blockbuster Dhurandhar, which has already etched itself as the highest-earning Hindi film of the year, has found its way back to cinema halls with discreet modifications. The refreshed cut, now screening nationwide, incorporates selective audio edits mandated by India’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, NDTV has learned.

According to sources, the directive instructed the filmmakers to mute the word “Baloch”, along with two additional verbal references tied to the same context. While the alterations are minimal in duration, they hold narrative sensitivity, given the film’s politically charged subject matter. The revised version officially replaced the earlier print in theatres starting January 1.

Inside the Government Directive

A source familiar with the development told NDTV, “The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has asked the makers to mute two words and one dialogue referring to Baloch.” The advisory was promptly complied with, allowing the film’s uninterrupted theatrical run to continue without structural changes to the storyline.

Despite these refinements, Dhurandhar remains uncompromising in its thematic ambition. The film ventures into the fraught terrain of Pakistan’s socio-ethnic fractures, weaving a tense narrative around militancy, identity, and the uneasy entanglement between extremist groups and state institutions. It fuses documented realities with imagined scenarios, creating a cinematic hybrid that feels both familiar and unsettling.

The film’s trailer, released on November 18, immediately ignited public curiosity. Rooted loosely in real events, Dhurandhar portrays Ranveer Singh as a covert operative confronting four of Pakistan’s most formidable terrorists. This premise sparked intense speculation online, with audiences attempting to decode the real-life inspirations behind the antagonists.

However, the filmmakers have chosen discretion over confirmation. While many viewers believe Singh’s character draws inspiration from Major Mohit Sharma, the Central Board of Film Certification has clarified that the role is entirely fictional, crafted to serve dramatic intent rather than historical replication.

Dhurandhar also signals the return of Aditya Dhar, the filmmaker behind Uri: The Surgical Strike. Dhar’s debut reshaped mainstream Hindi cinema with its assertive nationalist idiom, and his latest offering expands that framework with a broader geopolitical lens and heightened narrative aggression.
