Doctors Protest the Horrific Assault of a Junior Doctor in Assam

The gruesome attack of Dr Seuj Kumar Senapati in Udali Model Hospital in Assam’s Hojai has attracted immense criticism from the masses.

There is also a graphic video clip where Dr Senapati being attacked by a mob has gone viral on social media.

The doctor has been seriously injured and has been shifted to another hospital. His condition is said to be stable.

Dr Senapati was treating a patient named Giyaz Uddin from Pipal Pukhuri village who was a covid patient and he died on Tuesday as a result of covid related complications.

Dr Senapati told the media, “The attendant of the patient came to me saying the patient is serious and has not passed urine since morning. I went to the room and found that the patient was dead. As I broke the news to the attendant, another relative started abusing me.”

The mob of around 30 people then attacked the hospital. While most of the hospital staff managed to escape, Dr Senapti locked himself in a room. The mob managed to break open his room and assaulted him.

“They ransacked the hospital, we (the staff) ran for safety. I entered a room and tried to hide but they found me and assaulted me. They snatched my gold chain, my ring and my mobile”, he further stated.

The president of the Indian Medical Association, Dr J A Jayalal, has condemned the incident. Doctors would wear black badges today as a mark of protest.

The Assam Medical Service Association, (AMSA) visited Dr Senapati in hospital. They have also boycotted the Outpatient department (OPD) services today in all government medical facilities. Emergency services, Covid duties would however continue.

AMSA has warned that if such an incident occurs in the future it would cease all services in the state. They also demanded security at all hospitals.

Chief Minister of Assam Himanta Biswas Sarma has condemned the attack. He tweeted, “24 culprits involved in this barbaric attack have been arrested and the chargesheet will be filed at the earliest. I am personally monitoring this investigation and I promise that justice will be served.”
