Drew Barrymore Opens Up about Childhood Criticism and the Journey to Self-Acceptance

As a guest on her own show, Drew Barrymore became teary-eyed when she saw a snapshot of herself at just ten years old.

At that tender age, Drew Barrymore said she was exposed to remarks such as “too fat,” “not blonde enough,” and “too young” from adults in the industry.

On The Drew Barrymore Show, she recalled feeling confused and sad. “I no longer knew what I was supposed to be to other people,” she expressed. Surprisingly, this had been going on for many years.

The actress was visibly shaken while speaking about her childhood. This criticism affected her to such an extent that she struggled to maintain a positive and healthy mindset.

Reflecting on her long journey, the E.T. actress said that it took her many years to free herself from these pressures.

As a role model to young people, she encourages them to stop trying to please others and to embrace themselves as they are.

The Golden Globe winner believes that even when one is broken, one can heal—and once healed, help others do the same.

Sending a heartfelt message to teenagers, the actress reassured them that they are not alone in feeling pressured to conform to unrealistic standards.

Acknowledging how uncomfortable and isolating that pressure can be, Barrymore reminded them that she has walked the same path.

Barrymore also noted that perspectives often change with adulthood, as the pressure to please others gradually fades.

With time, she said, people begin to find ways to feel good about themselves regardless of appearance or expectations.
