Ed Sheeran Finds Joy after Darkness in New Album ‘Play’
Ed Sheeran’s eighth album Play marks a joyful new chapter, inspired by healing after personal loss. Blending Indian and Middle Eastern sounds, it explores love, escape, and emotional rebirth.
Global pop icon Ed Sheeran returns with Play, his eighth studio album, released on 12 September 2025. Marking a bold new phase in his musical journey, the album was born out of what Sheeran calls “the darkest period” of his life — and it reflects both healing and hope.
After the subdued and deeply personal tones of Subtract and Autumn Variations — both commercial underperformers — Play offers a striking contrast. Where those records focused on grief and hardship, including the loss of his close friend Jamal Edwards and his wife Cherry’s battle with cancer, Play moves toward brightness, rhythm, and cultural exploration.
“I just wanted to create joy and technicolour,” Sheeran said in a press release, “and explore cultures in the countries I was touring.”
The album draws heavy inspiration from Persian and Indian music, incorporating traditional instruments like the sitar, tabla, Kashmiri santoor, and South Indian kanjira. One standout track, Symmetry, features Gujarati drums and the metallic twang of the Banzouki, while the fan-favourite Sapphire — a duet with Indian superstar Arijit Singh — blends English, Hindi, and Punjabi over a smooth, lilting beat.
Importantly, Sheeran’s use of these global influences is anything but superficial. He made an 11-hour trip to Singh’s hometown of Jiaganj to properly learn the Punjabi lyrics for Sapphire, and during his six-city India tour earlier this year, he took sitar lessons, played football with local children, and even drew headlines when police shut down a spontaneous concert in Bengaluru.
Play explores themes of love, loyalty, escape, and letting go — a fitting emotional release after years of personal struggle. It also signals a creative reset. The album launches a new conceptual series from Sheeran, moving away from the “Mathematics” era. Future records are expected to be titled Pause, Rewind, Fast-Forward, and Stop.
With over 100 million monthly listeners, Sheeran remains the sixth most streamed artist on Spotify, and his 2017 hit Shape of You continues to top the platform’s all-time charts.
