Factors That Contributed to New Zealand Being a “Virus Free” Country

New Zealand is one of the few countries that are not dealing with the novel coronavirus while other countries are struggling to end the pandemic.

On Monday New Zealand’s Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said that they have completely stopped the spread of the virus and the last known case has also completely recovered.

It has been 17 days since the last new case was reported in New Zealand and there have been no active cases since Monday.

“We almost certainly will see cases here again, and I do want to say again, we will almost certainly see cases here again, and that is not a sign that we have failed, it is a reality of this virus. But if and when that occurs we have to make sure and we are, that we are prepared”, Jacinda said in a news conference.

So, what factors contributed to New Zealand’s success in battling the virus? Experts say that the Island’s isolated location gave the authorities plenty of time to study the nature of the virus and how it spreads.

Jacinda acted fast and imposed the lockdown early. They focussed on high testing procedures.

It closed its borders, schools, and non-essential businesses. They banned domestic and international travel and requested people to remain home.

Now, that the Island is coronavirus free, the authorities will lift all restrictions however border control will remain in place. Only New Zealanders and their families will be allowed to enter although they have to follow the 14-day quarantine procedure.  Schools, shops, and malls are now reopening with strict social distancing guidelines.

Jacinda’s emphatic style of leadership of connecting with people, being constantly on social media, sending personal messages to people has won the hearts of the masses. She practiced what she preached by strictly following the lockdown herself.
