Farhan Akhtar’s Boong Becomes Only Indian Film Nominated at 2026 BAFTAs

Farhan Akhtar’s critically acclaimed film Boong has earned a prestigious nomination in the Best Children and Family category at the 2026 BAFTA Awards, marking a significant milestone for Indian cinema on the global stage.

This makes Akhtar the only Indian filmmaker in the category, with Boong being the sole Indian film among the nominees.

Reacting to the nomination, Farhan Akhtar expressed to Hindustan Times his gratitude, saying, “The entire team is incredibly thrilled by the nomination for Boong. We are deeply honoured that BAFTA has recognised the film’s message and the values it conveys to a family audience.”

Set against the serene yet complex backdrop of a remote village in Manipur, Boong tells the poignant story of a young schoolboy and his mother as they grapple with the unexplained disappearance of the boy’s father.

The father, who had been working outside the state, suddenly ceases all communication, leaving the family suspended between fear and hope. As a gift for his mother, Boong sets out in search of his father, accompanied by his friend.

Through Boong’s eyes, the film delicately explores themes of family bonds, loss, perseverance, and hope, while also addressing deeper social issues such as racial identity and sensitive border tensions in the region.

Gugun Kipgen and Bala Hijam portray prime roles in the film.

Boong will face stiff competition from films such as Arco, Lilo & Stitch, and Zootropolis 2, which have also been nominated in the Best Children and Family category.

The 79th BAFTA Film Awards will be held on February 22, 2026, at London’s Royal Festival Hall.

Released in India in September 2024, the film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival 2024 and was later named a ‘Spotlight Film’ at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne.
