Federal Force vs. State Sovereignty: LA Boils Over Trump’s Guard Deployment

Los Angeles: Tensions reached a boiling point in Los Angeles on Sunday as massive protests erupted over President Donald Trump’s unprecedented decision to deploy the National Guard without state authorization. Crowds flooded the streets, blocked freeways, and torched autonomous vehicles in a dramatic response to federal immigration crackdowns. At the same time, law enforcement used tear gas, rubber bullets, and flash bangs to disperse them.

Mounted police and riot-clad officers flanked National Guard troops who were stationed near federal facilities, including a downtown detention center housing recent immigration detainees. The deployment of approximately 300 soldiers intensified already volatile demonstrations, marking the third consecutive day of public outcry against Trump’s enforcement policies.

By midday, protesters gathered at the Metropolitan Detention Center, chanting “shame” and “go home” at armed Guard members. Tensions quickly escalated when officers fired smoke canisters into the crowd, triggering chaotic scenes and more aggressive dispersal measures. Protesters later blocked the 101 freeway before being cleared by highway patrol.

Governor Gavin Newsom called the move a “serious breach of state sovereignty.” In a letter to Trump, arguing that the Guard’s presence was “inflaming tensions.” Mayor Karen Bass echoed this, saying, “This is about another agenda, this isn't about public safety.”

Trump justified his actions by invoking a legal clause meant for rebellion scenarios, insisting California’s leadership had failed to control immigration protests. “We're gonna have troops everywhere,” he told reporters, accusing state officials of impeding national security efforts. He warned that any obstruction could lead to charges, citing a recent arrest of a judge in Wisconsin as precedent.

Saturday’s protests had already surged across the Latino-majority cities of Paramount and Compton, where demonstrators attempted to halt Border Patrol vehicles. Some threw stones and debris, prompting the riot officers to deploy pepper balls and flash-bangs in response. Over 100 immigration arrests had been made in the past week, including the detention of a well-known labor union leader.

The deployment is notably the first time in decades the National Guard has been sent to a state without gubernatorial request, last seen during the 1965 Alabama civil rights march. Assistant DHS Secretary Tricia McLaughlin criticized California politicians for “defending heinous illegal alien criminals,” while Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth threatened to send in active-duty Marines if violence persisted.

About 500 Marines at Twentynine Palms were reportedly on standby. Meanwhile, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders accused Trump of “usurping” congressional authority, and Kamala Harris condemned the actions as part of a “cruel, calculated agenda.” In contrast, House Speaker Mike Johnson praised the move, calling it a necessary intervention in California’s “inability” to restore order.
