Bollywood’s most renowned choreographer Saroj Khan passed away due to cardiac arrest early Friday. She was 71. 

She was admitted to the Guru Nanak Hospital on June 17 after she complained of breathing problems. She has been tested negative for Covid-19. Her funeral ceremony took place early morning in Malad, Mumbai. 

Saroj Khan choreographed 2000 songs during her long tenure in Bollywood spanning 40 years. The bubbly dancer was popularly known as the “The Mother of Dance/Choreography in India.”

She began her career in the Indian Film Industry at the age of 3 as a child artist for the film ‘Nazrana.’ She learned dancing under B Sohanlal whom she later married.

She was only 13 then while he was 43. She later remarried businessman Sardar Roshan Khan and was blessed with a daughter Sukaina Khan. She worked as an assistant choreographer and later got a break as an independent choregrapher for the film ‘Geeta Mera Naam.’

Her claim to fame came when she choreographed the song ‘Hawa Hawai’ with Sreedevi for the film Mr. India. She got further recognition with iconic hits like ‘Ek Do Teen’ in ‘Tezaab’ and soon many super hits followed successively. 

Senior actress Madhuri Dixit took to twitter and expressed that she’s devastated at the loss of her guru. Madhuri and Saroj Khan worked together for several projects and went on to give several major hits. She disclosed that it was Saroj who helped her reach her full potential in dance.

The talented dancer is known for coercing her heroines to bring poise, grace, and expressions on the screen through her choreographed dance moves. Some say that the magic in the iconic dance tracks wouldn’t have been brought to light if it wasn’t for her guidance. 

The recipient of three national awards has been a prominent figure in shows like ‘NachBaliye’, Boogie Woogie and Jhalak Dikh La Ja.  The vivacious dancer literally made everyone dance to her tunes in the film industry.  Prominent figures from the industry remembered her and passed their condolences. 

 

Known for modernizing Indian film choreography, Saroj Khan will be always remembered and greatly missed by the Indian film fraternity as she was not only talented but a warm person at heart who always wore her happy smile. May her soul rest in peace.
