Due to snowstorm Filomena, several parts of Spain were covered with heavy layers of snow.

Filomena is said to be Spain’s heaviest snowfall since the 1970s. Capital Madrid was the worst-hit area. The snow fell in this city between Friday and Saturday.

At least four people have died and thousands of travellers have been left stranded.

Locals were trapped due to the unexpected storm forcing many to spend the night at shopping centers, sports centers, restaurants, and temporary shelters.

According to BBC, a Doctor Alvaro Sanchez walked for nearly two hours covering a distance of 17 km to get to work.  Several medical workers displayed acts of dedication towards their work by reaching their work spots despite the challenging circumstances.

Praising the doctor’s dedication to work, Spanish Health Minister Salvador Illa tweeted, “The commitment that the entire group of health workers is showing is an example of solidarity and dedication.”

Many people who owned vehicles offered to transport medical workers. They were others who volunteered to clear hospital entrance ways.

Soldiers have been deployed to clear around 700 major roads.

Flight operations at the Madrid International Airport that was halted on Friday due to the snowstorm have resumed on Sunday.

On a happy note, Spaniards took the opportunity to enjoy the large amounts of snow that they had been bestowed with. A Twitter user by the name of Jaded New Yorker shared some of these videos that will be amused.

Fearing snow turning into ice, the government is determined to clear the snow before the temperatures fall any further. They are also ensuring that the expected Covid vaccines and food supplies reach the affected areas on time. The cold wave is expected to last till Thursday according to BBC reports.
