Five Organs Donated by Charity Volunteer Leela Keshavji

Charity volunteer Leela Keshavji, 47, who greatly believed in the importance of organ donation suffered a sudden brain haemorrhage and died in the month of October. She’s from Nottinghamshire.

The subject of organ donation was so close to her heart that she regularly had conversations on the same topic with her loved ones.

Leela’s kidneys, lungs, liver, pancreas, and heart valves were all used to help other people in need. She saved five lives in total when her organs were donated.

Speaking about his wife, Manoj Keshavji said, “Many years ago she registered as a donor and she regularly had these conversations with myself and the children to explain the importance of it.”

A trained Hindu priest, Leela was extremely kind and indulged in various charity activities. She understood that many families were in pain who were desperately in need of organs. She also provided meals for the homeless and vulnerable.

Manoj expressed that his wife was an “inspiring” individual.

According to the National Health Service, black people and members of ethnic communities have to wait a year longer to receive a kidney in England when compared to their white counterparts. It’s because members from these communities don’t believe in organ donation due to religious and cultural reasons.

Now however there has been a major change in the UK law wherein it is compulsory for everyone to donate their organs at the time of death until and unless they’ve opted out of becoming a donor. This means that there would be more number of organ donors in the years to come.
