A sudden and devastating flash flood swept through the tranquil village of Ruidoso, New Mexico, on Tuesday afternoon, unleashing widespread destruction and forcing a state of emergency. The National Weather Service (NWS) declared a flash flood emergency and urged locals to remain vigilant as floodwaters surged through the mountainous community.
According to CBS News, the Gavilan Trailer Park faced dire circumstances, with multiple rescues ongoing. Kerry Gladden, spokesperson for the village, confirmed that several individuals remain unaccounted for, though exact figures are currently ambiguous. Injuries were also reported, but the extent remains nebulous, she added.
Ruidoso, located roughly three hours south of Albuquerque, is nestled in a verdant mountainous region. The office of Emergency Management issued an urgent alert urging residents near the riverbanks to evacuate to elevated terrain, strongly advising against attempting to drive through the torrent.
Photos disseminated by the National Weather Service illustrated the dramatic rise in the Rio Ruidoso water level in a mere hour. One image depicted the Hollywood gage overwhelmed as the river surged past typical thresholds.

The NWS later confirmed via X (formerly Twitter):
“The Rio Ruidoso at Hollywood reached a provisional crest of 20.24 feet this afternoon while significant flash flooding was occurring. If this is confirmed, it would be a record high crest.”

Dozens of roads were shuttered due to dangerous detritus, and cleanup efforts began swiftly. Official village pages also reported gas leaks, exacerbating the hazardous conditions.
This natural calamity was intensified by a single inch of rainfall falling onto burn scars, the residual terrain from wildfires that had razed the area last year. The combination has created an unpredictable hydrological response, amplifying the flood’s ferocity.
The NWS reiterated:
“A DANGEROUS situation is unfolding in RUIDOSO! A FLASH FLOOD EMERGENCY remains in effect! Seek HIGHER GROUND NOW! Do NOT attempt to drive through the floodwaters. The current will carry away your vehicle!”
Mayor Lynn Crawford pleaded with residents to remain indoors, saying:
“If you're at home, stay at home. If you're high and dry, that's a good deal right now.”
Three individuals are currently missing. Although no confirmed fatalities have been reported, concerns remain. Authorities did not confirm whether the missing persons were the father and two children mentioned earlier by the NWS.
