Vandi Verma has etched her name into space exploration history by leading NASA’s first-ever artificial intelligence–planned rover drive on Mars. An accomplished robotics engineer of Indian origin, Verma’s journey blends scientific rigor with a lifelong fascination for flight, machines, and the unknown.

Raised in a household closely linked to aviation, Verma’s curiosity for engineering was ignited early. Her father’s service in the Indian Air Force meant she grew up around aircraft, discipline, and problem-solving, an environment that subtly shaped her future path. Today, Verma serves as a Principal Engineer at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), operating under the California Institute of Technology. She also holds the role of Deputy Section Manager for Mobility and Robotics and acts as Chief Engineer for Robotic Operations on the Mars 2020 mission. Her responsibilities place her at the heart of how machines think, move, and survive millions of kilometres away from Earth.

Before joining NASA, Verma led the creation of PLEXIL, a formally verifiable plan-execution language. This technology allows autonomous systems to make decisions safely and predictably, an essential requirement for space missions where human intervention is delayed or impossible. Variants of this technology have since been embedded in planetary rovers and even human spaceflight programs.

Her academic foundation is equally formidable. After earning a degree in electrical engineering from Punjab Engineering College in Chandigarh, Verma moved to the United States, where she completed both her master’s and doctoral studies in robotics at Carnegie Mellon University, an institution renowned for cutting-edge research in autonomous systems.

In December, NASA confirmed a landmark achievement: the Perseverance rover successfully executed two drives on Mars that were planned entirely by artificial intelligence. Conducted on December 8 and 10, these drives marked the first time a rover navigated another planet using AI-generated plans rather than step-by-step human instructions.

The system processed orbital imagery and real-time navigation data to evaluate terrain hazards such as rocks, slopes, and sand traps. It then charted a safe, efficient route on its own. According to NASA leadership, this advancement signals a turning point in planetary exploration, allowing missions to adapt faster, travel farther, and extract more scientific value with reduced reliance on Earth-based commands.

Verma’s work stands as a testament to how careful innovation, when paired with responsibility, can expand humanity’s reach beyond its home planet.
