Global Tributes Honour Pope Francis after His Passing at 88
The world mourns Pope Francis, who passed away on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025. Tributes are pouring in from world leaders and celebrities alike.
The 266th pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Francis, passed away at the age of 88 on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025. Pope Francis was the Church’s first Latin American leader.
He was born Jorge Mario Bergoglio on December 17 in Buenos Aires. On his way to celebrate Spring Day, he passed by a church and decided to go in for confession. It was there that he was inspired by a priest, marking the beginning of his religious journey. He was elected pope on March 13, 2013, following the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI.
Pope Francis was widely recognized for his humility and progressive views, and he consistently championed global peace and dialogue among different faiths. He focused on helping the poor and marginalized. In 2015, he released the encyclical Laudato Si’, calling for urgent action on climate change. He openly addressed topics such as divorce, remarriage, and LGBT inclusion, and stood firmly against unjust discrimination.
The Vatican released his final testament just hours after his passing. In it, the pontiff requested to be buried directly in the earth—without marble, gold, or any form of grandeur. He expressed his wish to be laid to rest in a simple grave at the Basilica of Saint Mary Major.
Prominent personalities and faith leaders from around the world paid tribute to his legacy.
