February 14th is a day dedicated to love and people display acts of affection by sharing gifts, cards, chocolates and so on with their lovers, partners, friends and loved ones.
This day is specially dedicated to the martyr and priest - Saint Valentine of Rome.
There are many legends associated with Saint Valentine of Rome.
King Claudius was an ambitious ruler of Rome who banned men from getting married in order to make his armies stronger.
Saint Valentine found this order unjust. It is believed that the priest defied the order of King Claudius and secretly performed christian weddings for couples.
When the King came to learn about it he executed St.Valentine on February 14. Before his execution St.Valentine wrote a letter to the Jailer’s daughter whom he had cured of blindness. He signed the letter with the words “From your Valentine.”
This day is celebrated in honour of St.Valentine who stood up for love and brought couples together.
