His Journey began in 1980 when he joined the heavy metal group Tygers of Pan Tang. During his two-year stint, Sykes contributed to several albums and toured extensively. By 1982, he transitioned to the legendary Irish rock band Thin Lizzy, where he teamed up with guitarist Scott Gorham. Sykes played a pivotal role in their Thunder and Lightning album and later joined frontman Phil Lynott on a European tour under the moniker “The Three Musketeers”.
Syke’s career reached new heights when he was invited by David Coverdale to join Whitesnake. In 1984, he played in the Slide It In album and co-wrote the band’s self-titled 1987 release, which produced timeless hits like Still of the Night and Is This Love.
