Gully Boy Gets an Entry into Oscars While Ranveer Singh Says “Apna Time Aayega”

Social Media is abuzz with the news of Gully Boy’s official entrance to the 92nd Oscar Awards. The movie is a musical drama directed by Zoya Akhtar and has Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt, Kalki Koechlin and Siddhant Chaturvedi in prominent roles. The movie is based on the lives of aspiring rap artists- Divine and Naezy from the famous Dharavi slums in Mumbai.

Both Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt were quite thrilled on hearing this awesome news. They shared a note thanking the Film Federation of India, members of the Jury, Aparna Sen, Supran Sen, Anindya Dasgupta and the splendid cast and crew of Gully boy. Ranveer Singh captioned his note with the famous tag line from the superhit film: “Apna Time Aayega!” while Alia captioned her note with a heart emoji.

Siddhant Chaturvedi a.k.a. MC Sher from Gully Boy also took the opportunity to delve into the social media excitement and wrote, “Oscars!!!! Gully Se Global. Bow down @zoieakhtar. Bhaiii @ranveersingh @aliaabhatt @itsvijayvarma @ozajay @ritesh_sid @faroutakhtar and the Team! (sic).”

Here’s how Bollywood reacted:

Kalki Koechlin who had a prominent role in the movie, tweeted:

The hit film fell into controversy after its release as it had many similarities to the foreign movie ‘8 Mile’ that stars rap artist- Eminem. A writer from Quint labeled the movie as “an engineered, Indianized version of 8 Mile.” Despite sharp criticism from critics, Zoya Akhtar retorted by saying, “I get it (the comparison). I totally understand it, because that's the reference point and that's what they've seen so, that's the immediate reference point and people here just love to do that.”

Despite criticism from some areas, there were plenty of others who gave the movie a thumbs up. Anna M.M. Vetticad of ‘Firstpost’ remarked, “Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt are devastatingly good in Zoya Akhtar's ultimate anthem for the rebel.” On rotten tomatoes, the movie scored 100% based on 19 reviews. Since the plot was based on a true story of upcoming Mumbai rappers, the film struck the right chord with the masses. The film gives weight to the belief that dreams do come true for those who follow it with fervor despite faced with challenges. Besides the film, a documentary based on Divine’s life called ‘Gully Life’ was premiered across multiple channels of Discovery Network on July 1.

Until now, no film representing India has ever won an Oscar. The last film to represent India at the Oscars was ‘Barfi.’ ‘Lagaan’ was the last film that entered into the final five ‘Best Foreign Film’ category. Keeping this in mind, most fans would be eagerly waiting to witness if ‘Gully Boy’ can create magic on the ‘D Day’ by breaking the spell on February 9, 2020, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
