Haq on Netflix: A Gripping Courtroom Drama Rooted in Real History

The Netflix OTT movie Haq, featuring Emraan Hashmi and Yami Gautam, is receiving widespread appreciation for its powerful plot and impactful performances.
Yami Gautam Dhar has been earning significant praise for portraying the true and deeply moving story of Shah Bano Begum. The film is based on the landmark 1985 Triple Talaq case.
Many believe this to be one of Yami Gautam’s finest performances. Several celebrities, including Kiara Advani and Sanjay Kapoor, also praised her work. Kiara wrote, “Just watched Haq on Netflix. Yami Gautam, what a beautiful performance,” while Sanjay Kapoor called it an “excellent film.”
The movie is based on the 1985 Supreme Court judgment in Mohd. Ahmed Khan vs Shah Bano Begum, which addressed Triple Talaq and maintenance laws. It tells the story of one woman’s fight against a deeply flawed system.
After her selfish husband remarries, he stops providing child support and attempts to silence her through Triple Talaq. The film powerfully raises relevant themes such as women’s rights and exposes the injustice Muslim women faced under the Triple Talaq laws.
Yami Gautam beautifully conveys the pain, resilience, and strength of a woman who fights her battle almost single-handedly, with a little support from her family. Emraan Hashmi also delivers one of his best performances, bringing skill, maturity and depth to his negative role—especially in the courtroom scenes.
Speaking about the film, Yami shared, “When you read a story or a script, as an actor, it is my job to understand it, not just read it. The emotional understanding of a character is extremely important, especially when the script is strong. Sometimes we do films that are purely fictional, but HAQ is different; it’s entertaining, powerful, and thought-provoking.”
The movie was first released in theatres on 7 November 2025 and performed decently at the box office. However, after its release on Netflix, it reached a much wider audience, leading to a significant surge in viewership.
Haq is a must-watch on Netflix as it powerfully exposes how unjust societal laws can devastate an individual’s life. Yet, in Shah Bano’s case, her suffering became a catalyst for change—transforming not only her own life but also paving the way for greater rights and justice for countless women in her community.
