HBO Max Surges ahead with 142 Nominations at the 77th Emmys, Outshining Rivals
The 77th Emmy nominations see HBO Max dominate with 142 nods, outpacing competitors like Netflix and Apple TV. "The Penguin" and "Severance" lead the charge in a dynamic awards season.
Washington, DC: The curtain has risen on the 77th Emmy nominations, and HBO Max has made a prodigious return to form, garnering an astonishing 142 nods, setting a new peak for the platform. This haul is spearheaded by heavyweight dramas like The Penguin, The White Lotus, The Last of Us, and the hit comedy series Hacks.
As per Variety, this tally marks an epoch-defining moment for HBO’s awards legacy, eclipsing its previous best of 140 nominations achieved in 2020. However, the all-time EMMY nomination zenith still belongs to Netflix, which amassed 160 nominations the same year.
In 2025, Netflix secured 120 nominations, a commendable increment from last year’s 107. Still, it trailed behind HBO Max’s mammoth feat. The Penguin, a limited series under HBO’s banner, surpassed prognostications by securing 24 nominations, second only to Apple TV’s Severance, which led the pack with 27 prestigious bids.
The White Lotus, a perennial darling of Emmy voters, dazzled again with 23 nominations. Meanwhile, The Last of US, a narrative adaptation of a globally cherished video game, snagged nods, bolstered by lead performances from Bella Ramsey and Pedro Pascal.
On the comedy front, Hacks maintained its hegemony with nominations, standing just behind Apple TV’s The Studio, which garnered 23. This reiterates Apple TV’s meteoric rise in just under six years of existence.
Interestingly, HBO Max, after witnessing a transient ebb during the Hollywood strike-riddled 2024, has bounced back vigorously. Last year’s 91 bids seem modest in comparison to this year’s resurgence.
Apple TV had a banner year, too, collecting 79 nominations. Severance emerged as its magnum opus, while Shrinking earned seven nominations—an affirmation of Apple’s diverse narrative ventures.
Walt Disney Co. also left its imprimatur on the awards season, amassing 136 nominations across its platforms. Hulu and FX contributed a lion’s share with 95 nominations across their platforms. Hulu and FX contributed a lion’s share with 95 nominations, led by The Bear with 13 nods. FX, however, felt the vacuum left by Shogun, which dominated last year with 25 nominations.
Disney's Star Wars: Andor Season 2 garnered 14 nominations, further cementing the franchise’s presence in modern storytelling.
