Here’s Why It Is Important to Celebrate International Men’s Day
The prime reason why International men’s day came into existence is to raise awareness of men’s issues and to celebrate positive role models in society.
The theme for international men’s day 2019 is “Making a Difference for Men and Boys.” For those unaware, international men’s day is celebrated every year on November 19.
The prime reason why International men’s day came into existence is to raise awareness of men’s issues and to celebrate positive role models in society. Topics such as men’s health, toxic masculinity, and male suicide are discussed. Dr. Jerome Teelucksingh revived the event to address all issues affecting men.
This day also coincides with Movember which is a day where men chose to grow their facial hair to raise awareness on issues such as male suicide, health conditions such as prostate cancer and also mental health.
Warwick Marsh who is the coordinator of internationalmensday.co.uk, said, “We want to promote the need to value men and boys and help people make practical improvements in men and boy’s health and well-being.”
The celebration of this day is of utmost importance as it promotes positive male role models and the overall well-being of men.
Often young men impersonate their fathers to define their personalities and identities. Now with a bigger platform like international men’s day younger men can look up to positive role models outside the realms of their own families. There is no dearth of positive role models in our country.
IMD is a day to discuss men’s health problems that is often ignored. To have stronger families and better functioning of communities, men’s health issues need to be addressed. This is inclusive of mental health. According to current research by IMD, the suicide rate of men is three times higher than women. Most men hesitate to take help and they must be encouraged to do so.
IMD research says that one in three men is a victim of domestic violence. Many men don’t report the violence as again reporting the issue may be considered a sign of weakness which is one of the main gender straits of patriarchy. Men must be made aware that it is okay to dip into their emotional pool and not repress their feelings.
Today is also a day to acknowledge all the men who have contributed to our society through their area of work be it entertainment, arts, sports, business, politics and so on.
On this special day Reliance entertainment has given a shout out to men through this creative video:
