Hoax News of Celine Dion Passing away in a Plane Crash Goes Viral

A video claiming that singer Celine Dion has passed away in a plane crash is going viral. The video has the CNN logo on it. The caption of the video reads, “The Canadian Superstar and Singing Legend Celine Dion Died in Private Plane Crash after Her Courage World Tour in Milwaukee.”

This news, however, turned out to be a hoax and it was detected by India Today Anti Fake News War Room (AFWA). They clarified the information that CNN had never run this news on its channel. The fake video was just attributed to the channel. 

The video begins with news anchor saying “we have some terrible sad news to report this morning, heartbreaking and devastating” after which Celine Dion’s picture pops up. The newsreader however never reveals the name of the person. At the end of the video, “Rest in Peace Celine Dion 1968 to 2019” is captioned. 

Fortunately, the original video has been traced and it appeared back on June 8, 2018, in which the newsreaders announced the death of Anthony Bourdain. The newsreaders announce the same lines as in the current fake video.

The fake video was posted on websites such as online.newstrends2k18.info and https://worldnews.hytactv.info which doesn’t appear to be credible news resources.

The fake video has been viewed more than 16 lakh times and received over 5,300 shares. It is not the first time that news related to the singer passing away was circulated. Similar news of the singer passing away was spread way back in 2013.
